Light-emitting diode

From Encyc

A light-emitting diode is an electronic component that emits light when current is passed through a diode. Relatively dim for many years, LEDs were used for alarm clocks and small displays. Recently they have dramatically increased in brightness and are available in more colors. They have replaced incandescent light bulbs for many uses, but their harsh light has caused health problems for many people.
