Martin Fessey

Mereth Cecil Fessey CB, known as Martin Fessey (19 May 1917 - 20 April 2006), was the Director of the United Kingdom Business Statistics Office.

Educated at Westminster School and the London School of Economics, he joined the army in 1940. After wartime service, he joined the Department of Transport in 1947. He moved to the Board of Trade in 1948 and was prompted to Statistician in 1956, Chief Statistician in 1965 and Director of the Business Statistics Office in 1969. He retired in 1977, when he was awarded a CB.

Active in retirement, he was Statistical Adviser to the Syrian and Mexican Governments in 1979 and consultant to the Statistical Office of the European Union, 1990–95. He joined the Royal Statistical Society in 1956, and was on its council 1n 1974-8. He chaired its Official Statistics Committee in 1983-6, taking over after Sir Maurice Kendall died in office.
