Master Hand
Master Hand is a recurring boss in the Super Smash Bros. series. He is a giant, white-gloved right hand that moves around in the air. Master Hand first appeared in Super Smash Bros. and has returned in every subsequent entry in the series. He typically appears at the end of Classic Mode (titled "1P Game" in the original Super Smash Bros.), where he awaits the player on the stage known as Final Destination and does a sinister laugh at the start of the confrontation. Unlike playable fighters, Master Hand's damage is not tracked as a rising percentage but instead uses a numerical HP counter, similar to those found in traditional fighting games.
Master Hand has an erratic, left-handed counterpart named Crazy Hand, who often fights alongside him, especially at higher difficulty levels.
Appearances
[edit | edit source]Super Smash Bros.
[edit | edit source]In Super Smash Bros., Master Hand first appears during the cutscene that plays when starting up the game, arranging objects on a table and placing two fighter dolls. After counting down from three, Master Hand snaps his fingers, bringing the dolls to life.
Master Hand appears at the end of 1P Game. He has 300 HP regardless of difficulty, which affects the moves he uses as well as how much damage they inflict. Some of Master Hand's attacks include swiping across the field, firing light-blue laser beams from his fingers, and firing golden Bullet Bills from his fingers.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
[edit | edit source]In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Master Hand is fought at the end of Classic Mode. Beginning with this game, Master Hand's base HP increases at higher difficulty levels. It is also the first game in which Crazy Hand can appear to assist him, provided certain conditions are met. Master Hand now only faces left, as Crazy Hand is the right-facing boss while both are fighting together.
Master Hand has a collectible trophy that says he is the symbolic link between the real world and the battlefields of the Super Smash Bros. series.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
[edit | edit source]In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Master Hand retains his role in Classic mode, also being assisted by Crazy Hand on higher difficulties.
Master Hand also appears in the story mode Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, although not as a boss. He is under the control of Tabuu, who uses chains of light to force Master Hand to obey his will. The fighters recruited into the Subspace Army are unaware of Tabuu's existence and believe they are following Master Hand's orders. Later, Ganondorf discovers that Master Hand is being controlled and attacks him, breaking the chains and freeing him. Master Hand is left with visible wounds where the chains of light had restrained him. Master Hand tries to attack Tabuu but is ultimately defeated.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
[edit | edit source]In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Master Hand is fought only in Classic Mode. He also hosts his own mode, Master Orders, where players must complete challenges for rewards. Below intensity 3.0, Master Hand is fought alone, but between intensity 3.1 to 7.9, the player can decide to fight him with Crazy Hand. Starting at intensity 8.0, the player's fighter is forced to fight both Master Hand and Crazy Hand together. If the two are fought together on intensity 5.1 or higher, Master Hand releases dark energy known as Master Core after taking a certain amount of damage.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
[edit | edit source]In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Master Hand is fought in certain fighters' Classic Mode routes. Multiple Master Hands also appear in Adventure Mode: World of Light, where they are controlled by Galeem. There is one part of the journey where the player plays as Master Hand.
