Mathematics

From Encyc

Mathematics is the language of computation. It can be categorized by division into pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics is studied for its own sake; the most important areas are algebra, analysis and topology. Applied mathematics is studied for its use in physics, economics or other areas and includes the study of logical consequences from a set of axioms.

The entities covered by axioms can be anything conceivable or be left undefined. They are usually numbers and shapes.
