Matias Reyes is an American, with a long criminal record, who freed the five youths initially convicted in the Central Park jogger case.[1]
Background
[edit | edit source]The five individuals originally convicted after a beautiful young woman was raped, and beaten close to death, had all made dubious confessions, in 1989.[1][2] They were Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise. After close to 14 years in prison, one of them, Korey Wise, met Reyes, the actual rapist, and described their wrongful convictions. Hearing Wise's story triggered Reyes to come forward, and confess. Reyes DNA matched the samples, and the five wrongfully convicted men had a review that, eventually, resulted in their exoneration.[3]
Other crimes
[edit | edit source]When Reyes first came forward, to confess, authorities did not, at first reveal his identity. Nevertheless, New York Times reporters did learn he was Reyes, and published he was tied to three other rapes and the rape-murder of a pregnant woman.[4] He was convicted of these crimes in 1991, two years after the Central Park case. His sentence was for 33 1/3 years.
Reyes became eligible for parole in 2022.[5]
