Mikhail Gorbachev

Mikhail Gorbachev was the premier of the Soviet Union during its dissolution in 1991. He thought he could control a certain degree of economic and political liberalization but he could not and the country spun apart, with the SSRs declaring independence. Boris Yeltsin took over the leadership of Russia following a failed coup attempt.
