Mortain

Mortain is a city in the Normandy region of France. It was the site of a German counterattack in August 1944, during the Allied campaign to liberate France. Following the Allied breakout at Avranches, Hitler ordered some Panzer units to attack westwards in an attempt to reach the Atlantic and cut off the Allies who had broken through. The attack was a failure and resulted in many more German casualties as they then tried to escape east from the Falaise pocket.
