The Mp3 is a very popular audio file format that compresses easily. The Mp in Mp3 comes from MPEG. The original MPEG (or MPG) files were used for audio and video. Later, Mp2 was invented, then Mp3. Mp3 still remains very popular, even though Mp4 does exist. Mp3 is most likely the most popular audio format on the web, though WAV files are quite common.
