Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a Turkish leader who commanded the Ottoman Empire's successful defense of the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War I. In the aftermath of the war he became the first president of Turkey, and modernized the new country. He favored a more secular, western-style government than the previous Ottoman Empire had been.
