New York City
New York City is the largest city in the United States of America. It is located in New York State, towards the northern end of the eastern seaboard.
Originally colonized by the Dutch Empire, who bought the lands of Manhattan from native Americans, it was later sold to the British Empire. Some Dutch influence has remained, for example the flag of the city is orange, white and blue, which were the colors of the flag of the Dutch empire.
It is divided into five boroughs:
- Brooklyn, which is on Long Island.
- Manhattan, which occupies Manhattan Island.
- Queens, which is on Long Island.
- Staten Island, which occupies Staten Island.
- The Bronx, which is the only borough on the mainland.
New York City is the financial capital of the USA, being the location of the main stock exchange and the headquarters of many banks.
