Open source

From Encyc

Open source often refers to the way a software program is written. When a piece of software is "open source" that means the the source code that tells the program how to run is freely available.

Open source can also make a reference to hardware, as in "open source hardware". For this sort of hardware, the designs are freely available, so anyone can see how it works, and given the right skills and materials could make their own replication.
