Oran Routh is an American who first rose to attention, on September 15, 2024, when interviewed by reporters shortly after learning his father, Ryan Wesley Routh, had been arrested for planning to shoot former President Donald Trump.[1] Routh offered spirited defenses of his father to multiple news agencies, including CNN, The Guardian and The Daily Mail.

Routh's mother, Lora Frances Wilson, married his father in 1989. They had two more children, Sara, and Adam, prior to divorcing in 2003.[2]

  • He said he was surprised by the arrest, as trying to shoot a politician seemed out of character, for his father.[3][4]
  • He claimed he didn't believe his father even owned a gun.[3][5]
  • He acknowledge his father hated Donald Trump, adding "as every thinking person does".[3]
  • He described how his father had travelled to Ukraine in 2022, and volunteered to provide humanitarian aid.[1]
  • He praised his father as “a loving and caring father” and an “honest hardworking man”.[1][4]

Charges against Oran Routh

[edit | edit source]

On September 21, 2024, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, and other law enforcement officials searched Oran Routh's home.[6][7][8][9] According to Fox News affiliate WGHP they weren't searching for child porn, their search was “in connection with an investigation unrelated“. But the search, nonetheless, turned up hundreds of child porn files. He was charged with "possessing child pornography and receiving child pornography." Fox News reported the charging documents said “These files include video from a known child pornography series created outside of the state of North Carolina.”

Routh's home was searched on September 21, 2024.[8] He was taken into custody on that day after law enforcement officials found cocaine, MDMA and ketamine.

National Public Radio reported law enforcement officials didn't explain what triggered the first search warrant to search Routh's home.[10] However, they noted ABC News and CNN, cited unnamed sources who had told them the search was related to Routh's father. A second phone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, was found during the search, and that triggered obtaining a second search warrant to search all of Routh's electronic devices, and this is when the pornography was found.[7] It was a portable memory card, plugged into the second phone, tucked in a laptop bag, that contained the porn. His everyday phone did not contain any porn.

At a hearing on December 2, 2025, Routh faced additional Child Pornography charges.[11] WFMY confirmed that the initial search of his house, on September 21st, was triggered by his verbal support of his father, after his father's capture on suspicion he planned to kill Trump

Pled guilty in October 2024

[edit | edit source]

Routh pled not guilty on October 2, 2024, shortly after his arrest.[12][13][9][14] He was released under the supervision of his mother.

He pled guilty to possessing child pornography involving a prepubescent minor or a child under the age of 12, and four other charges were dropped.[15]

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 14, 2025.[15] After his guilty plea his bail was revoked.

Local news interviewed people who knew Routh.[13] A former landlord described Routh a problem tenant. He said that, when it came time to evict Routh he had called upon his father Ryan Routh, to help control him. The landlord quoted Routh's father as saying Oran had always been argumentatice.

Hearing of February 12, 2025

[edit | edit source]

Routh is reported to have issued a verbal "outburst" during a February 12, 2025 hearing.[16] He is reported to have asserted that the scrutiny that triggered the search warrants against him was "politically motivated".

Sentencing

[edit | edit source]

Routh was sentenced on July 7, 2025, for a term of seven years.[17] His judge explained his sentencing had been delayed because Routh's lawyers had appealed to withdraw from the case.
