Over-burden

From Encyc

The term overburden is used in mining, to refer to the rock and soil above where the valuable material is found. In open-pit mining the overburden is scooped up and carried away. Alternately shafts are excavated through the overburden, to provide access to the seams of ore. Personnel and machinery is lowered down these shafts, and the ore is hauled up.
