Pakistan
Pakistan is a country in southern Asia. It used to be part of British India, but became a separate country when India became independent from the British Empire in 1947. The country's founder was Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who proposed the idea of a state for Muslims in British India. Since then it has fought several losing wars against India, and one civil war, in which Bangladesh seceded from Pakistan. For years, it was ruled by a military dictator, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who launched an "Islamisation" campaign that established Islamic theocratic principles in government.
There are multiple metropolitan areas in Pakistan; some of the larger ones include Islamabad (the capital city), Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
The majority of the population is Muslim and they have been loyal allies of the United States during the War on Terror. They tend to be more secular than their neighbors in Iran and Afghanistan. Their national intelligence (spying) agency is called the Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, and under the direction of Hamid Gul, supported the Taliban.
