Philipp von Boeselager
Philipp von Boeselager was one of the participants in the July 20, 1944 plot to kill Adolf Hitler. He helped to assemble the bomb that was used. On the day of July 20, he led his cavalry formation hundreds of miles towards Berlin before the operation was called off. Due to the chaos on the eastern front, and the way cavalry normally fought defensive actions, their absence was not noticed.
He was one of the few survivors of the conspiracy.
He wrote Valkyrie: The Plot To Kill Hitler. In the book, he credited his family, experiences in the outdoors, and Catholicism with giving him a foundation from which he decided to resist the Nazis.
