A pirate is a type of criminal who attacks ships at sea. In the past, captured pirates were often hung. Now they typically wind up serving long prison terms. Some pirates come from Somalia.

In the early 1700s, pirates organized an independent state in the Bahamas. The region quickly reverted to British rule.
