The Confederate States of America, Confederacy, or CSA, was a group of eleven southern states that attempted to secede in 1861 and then fought an unsuccessful war to try to expel federal forces. The Confederates wrote a constitution, set up a government, and printed paper money. President Lincoln's position was that the states could not leave, and were therefore in a state of rebellion and that the CSA should not be recognized, and he kept foreign powers from recognizing it.

The capital was in Richmond, Virginia. The Confederacy survived for a few weeks more after Richmond fell.
