Harp's family life

[edit | edit source]

Harp has one sibling, his youger sister Natalie. Harp's parents agreed to home-school their children. Harp's mother Jill provided the pair with an education heavily laced with her conservative Christian evangelical faith and American Exceptionalism.[5] Harp recounts his mother teaching them white slaveowners should be forgiven "back then—that was normal."[4]

In a profile in The Washington Post Harp said that, at 15, his mother allowed him to broaden his horizon by allowing him to join a debate club in San Diego.[6] A lecturer he met there recommended A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn’s. Harp described reading the book in bed, by flashlight, to evade his mother's scrutiny. He dscribed the book profoundly reshaping his ideology.

Harp remained close to his father, Robert, even as he grew estranged from his mother nd sister.[7] His father committed suicide on July 17, 2020, and Harp has not spoken to Natalie and Jill since. He said that he learned Natalie was Trump's aide from a newspaper article, in 2023.
