The term prostitution usually refers to the sale of sex acts. There are some jurisdictions, like some of the counties of Nevada, where some regulated forms of prostitution, are legal.

Some modern commentators regard sex workers as victims, not criminals.

Agents who market sex workers, often called "pimps", or "madames".

Clients are informally referred to as "Johns". In some jurisdictions the act of purchasing sexual acts is also criminalized.
