Reginald Beales

Reginald Edwin Beales CBE (16 Sept. 1909 - 22 Sept. 1980) was a Government statistician.

Born in Norwich, he attended the City of Norwich School.

At first, he worked for insurance companies: Norwich Union Life Insurance Society, 1926-31 and Northern Assurance Company, 1931-43. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Actualties in 1934.

He moved to the recently formed Central Statistical Office in 1943. In 1949, he transferred to Inland Revenue on promotion to Chief Statistician; he was Director of Statistics and Intelligence there, Inland Revenue, 1952–57. he then returned to the Central Statistical Office as Deputy Director, retiring in 1972. He was awarded the CBE in 1961.

He joined the Royal Statistical Society in 1947. he was a member of its Council, 1965–69, Vice-President, 1967–68 and Chairman of the Official Statistics Committee, 1975-77.
