Risdon prison
Risdon prison is the only maximum security prison in Tasmania. It replaced Port Arthur as the site of the maximum security prison. Associated with the prison is also Tasmania's main mental hospital, which is primarily for people who are considered to be insane and unfit to stand trial for major crimes such as murder.
Risdon prison is also called "the pink palace" because all of its walls are painted pink, apparently as an attempt to stop violence.
All major crimes conducted anywhere in Tasmania, that require maximum security imprisonment, lead to people being taken to Risdon prison.
The most notable recent person going to Risdon prison was Martin Bryant in relation to his alleged involvement in the events known as the Port Arthur massacre in nearby Port Arthur. Martin Bryant, due to his mental illnesses, had previously spent time in Risdon prison's mental hospital, and lived near to the area.
