Ror-Shak

From Encyc

Ror-Shak is an electronic act and a duo made by DJs and musicians Stakka and DB.

Ror-Shak was initially an experiment: Stakka, who had been producing drum and bass music for a long time, asked DB if he would like to collaborate on a track for a single. Db had previously had frustrating experiences working in a studio in the past, but decided to give the project a try.

Their first production was Groupies, signed and released by Breakbeat Science. The real success for DB was that he found working in the studio quite painless, and that the results were solid. Impressed by Stakka's ability in the studio, he decided to keep producing with him and made more music. The sound of their production started being oriented towards a less amorphous form of the genre, and much more musical.

They approached singer Julee Cruise, who they had sampled, and asked her to listen and give her permission for the use. She was enthusiastic and also offered to write some original material and to sing with them on the album.

Ror-Shak's album Deep has been turned into something that regular music listeners can find enjoyable, without knowing its roots in drum and bass. The album, which features various guest musicians, ended up taking over 12 months to make, mostly because of Stakka's attention to detail.

The name Ror-Shak is a play on the name of swiss psychiatrist Dr. Rorschach, who developed the ink blot test in which everybody sees something different. It's also a reference to Watchman character Rorschach.
