S. Mohan
Dr. S. Mohan (1930-2019) was a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and former Acting Governor of Karnataka, India.
Education
[edit | edit source]Born November 2, 1930, A graduate of the prestigious Presidency College in Chennai (Madras), India, with his law degree from the University of Madras and then the master of law in constitution and international law, Shanmughasundaram Mohan was awarded the Lakshminarasa Reddy Gold Medal and was a recipient of a Sri Muthuswamy Iyer Scholarship.[1][2][3]
Legal career
[edit | edit source]He enrolled as an advocate in the High Court of Madras in August, 1954, Appointed as Assistant Government Pleader in 1966; appointed as special government pleader in 1967 and as government pleader in 1969. and was appointed Advocate General of Madras in 1971. He was later appointed as an additional Judge of Madras High Court in February, 1974, and he was made a permanent Judge of the same High Court on September 1, 1975. He was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High in 1988 and as both the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in1989 and the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka. Justice Mohan was elevated to the bench of the Supreme Court of India in 1991. He was also appointed as the Acting Governor of Karnataka for a brief period in 1990. He retired on October 2, 1995.
During his tenure as a Judge, Justice Mohan mainly dealt with constitutional law.
Other contributions
[edit | edit source]He also served as the chairman of the National Cyber Safety and Security Standards in India. He authored numerous books in both English and Tamil, notably Justice Triumphs. Justice Mohan was also an excellent orator and participated in international oratory conferences as well as in India.
Personal life
[edit | edit source]Justice Mohan was known to his friends as possessing an excellent sense of humor, regaling them in his Chennai home with his large toy parrot. In the fall of 1996 he served as an interport lecturer on the Semester at Sea program. Justice Mohan passed away on December 26, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2009. He leaves a daughter who lives in Philadelphia and a granddaughter.
