SS Edmund Fitzgerald
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a lake freighter that sank with the loss of all crew, during a storm on Lake Superior.
Gordon Lightfoot wrote a haunting song about the sinking, and the loss of the crew.
Her wreck has been found, and explored, but experts still discuss aspects of her sinking.
She was carrying iron ore. Water may have been leaking in through broken hatch covers. She asked for the assistance of another nearby freighter, when her radar stopped working. The other captain was able to tell the Edmund Fitzgerald's location, using his own radar. He could tell the Edmund Fitzgerald was not on top of nearby shoals, when she suddenly disappeared.
