San Francisco

San Francisco is a city in the United States.

It is located in California. It is on about near the central part of the coast, and is on a peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the San Francisco Bay to the north and east. It has a famous bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge.

It has had several earthquakes and fires.

Its early growth was fueled by the Gold Rush in 1849.

A former prison in the bay is nearby, Alcatraz.

Large numbers of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people live there. It played an important role in the gay rights movement.
