Saruman

Saruman aka Saruman the White or Saruman of Many Colours is a wizard character in the Lord of the Rings. He initially outranks Gandalf as the leader of the Istari (wizards) but he is demoted following the fall of Isengard to the Ents.

He made the mistake of using one of the palantirs. Sauron captured a different palantir at Minas Morghul and used it to ensnare Saruman. Saruman was the brightest wizard but not really as wise as Gandalf.
