Scurvy

From Encyc

Scurvy, or Hypovitaminosis C, is a nutritional deficiency of Vitamin C. It occurs in guinea pigs, primates, and cetaceans. Vitamin C is necessary for the growth and maintenance of collagen in these groups. Other animals are able to synthesize it on their own.

It was discovered among sailors on long voyages, who would get loose teeth, joint pain, and bleeding problems. This was prevented by the introduction of lemons and limes to sailors' diets. Citrus fruit is high in vitamin C.
