Seelow Heights
Seelow Heights was one of the last battles of World War II. Germans fortified a position on the west bank of the Oder River, in order to protect Berlin from invasion. The intention was to make a crossing so costly that even the Soviets would be forced to turn back or negotiate.
While the Germans did inflict significant casualties on the Soviets, they were hopelessly outgunned and outnumbered. Berlin fell shortly after the Seelow Heights were taken.
