Sicily

From Encyc

Sicily is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is part of Italy. It has been overrun by conquerers many times in history. Greeks settled there and founded Syracuse. Athens attacked it and ruined its own economy.

Carthage and Rome fought over Sicily.

Sicily was invaded by Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans.

During World War II, the British and Americans invaded from North Africa. The German commander, Kesselring, had several first-rate divisions and fought a skillful delaying action before evacuating across the Strait of Messina.
