Skyscraper

From Encyc

The term skyscraper refers to particularly tall buildings. The term was coined in 1883, and, at that time, it was applied to new innovative buildings of 10 to 20 storeys.[1]

Early skyscrapers were built in cities in the United States, as the challenging underlying geology of older European cities, like London, made it a challenge to sink firm foundations necessary for skyscrapers.

As technology improved the height required to be considered a skyscraper also grew.[1]
