Sonar

Sonar is a method of locating objects underwater, using sound waves. Active sonar uses a transmitter to produce waves, then measures the time it takes for them to return to a listening device. Passive sonar uses elaborate listening devices to hear sounds in the water.

In war, sonar is used to locate submarines, to drop torpedoes on them or blow them up with depth charges.
