The Spanish Civil War was a military conflict that took place between 1936 and 1939.
Hitler and Mussolini supported fascist General Francisco Franco against the Soviet and Western-supported Spanish Republic. Both sides used the conflict to test new weapons and methods of warfare.
Carpet bombing was introduced when the Basque city of Guernica was bombed by the fascists using German and Italian planes.
The Lincoln Brigade fought for the Republic.
