Temporary account

On 4 November 2025 Wikipedia introduced temporary accounts for unregistered users. This replaced IP editing, with IP addresses no longer shown publicly due to privacy reasons.

There is also a user right "Temporary account IP viewer" with basic requirements: 300 edits across 6 months, and a "demonstrated need for access".

Temporary accounts might make vandalism harder to track, as they change much more frequently than many IP addresses. They change every 90 days, and also if browser cookies are reset.

All temporary accounts come in the same format "~2025-12345-67".
