Timor

From Encyc

Timor is an island in the Pacific Ocean, lying north of Australia and divided into two nations. Indonesia controls the western half of the island, while Timor-Leste, an independent nation, controls the eastern half. The latter gained its independence after 24 years of struggling against Indonesian rule, and as its national languages Portuguese and Tetum (Tetun). During the occupation, massacres occurred that cost the lives of an estimated 200,000 East Timorese. As East Timor was and is a very small nation by population standards, the massive casualties accounted for nearly a third of the population, making it influential in stunting the development of East Timor as a nation.
