Tortoise

From Encyc

A tortoise is a large terrestrial reptile that has a hard shell similar to turtles. The Galapagos tortoises are some of the largest and longest-lived animals on the planet. They differ from turtles and terrapins because of their domed shells, terrestrial nature and an exclusive herbivorous diet

Geographic Range

[edit | edit source]

The previously mentioned Galapagos tortoise lives only on the Galapagos Islands, while the Aldabra Giant Tortoises live in the Seychelles islands. Smaller tortoises like the gopher tortoise live in the Sonora Desert, while the Pancake Tortoise lives in Kenya and Tanzania.

All tortoises are mainly herbivorous, only eating plant matter like leaves, fruits, although sometimes they eat insects, slugs and even carrion.
