Tremolo picking

Tremolo picking is a technique used in guitar playing and with other stringed instruments. It is done by using a plectrum, or pick, to rapidly play one note using up and down motions, so quickly that it sounds like a single note with a tremolo effect. It is popular in middle eastern music and in surf music.
