Troedrhiwgwair

From Encyc
(Redirected from Troedrhiw-gwair)

Troedrhiwgwair is a village in the Sirhowy Valley of South Wales. It is located in Blaenau Gwent, on a mountainside just south of Tredegar.

The village was built in 1863 to house the workers of local collieries and iron works. At its peak it had a population of 500 in 96 houses, as well as a pub, church, post office, and school.[1][2]

In 1973 the mountain above the village, Man Moel, was surveyed by the local council, who deemed it unsafe due to risk of a landslide. Locals were told to move out but some refused to leave. In the mid-1980s there were plans to relocate the remaining residents and demolish the village, but in 1988 a public inquiry allowed the residents to stay. The empty buildings have since been demolished and as of 2022 there are only 12 houses.[1][2]

The name Troedrhiwgwair means "the foot of the grassy slope" in Welsh.
