UV filter
Appearance
A UV filter is a piece of glass or plastic used to remove UV rays from light before it enters a camera lens, and also to protect the lens from dirt and moisture. In digital photography, the UV filtering function is unimportant as the sensor is unaffected. In film photography, strong UV light in outdoor sun can cause a bluish cast to film. The protection function is the main reason why many photographers use UV filters.
Some are treated with coatings to reduce glare or reflections. Coatings can be single or multi-layer. Uncoated lenses are generally easier to clean because you don't have to worry about damaging the coating.
