Ukraine

Ukraine is a country in eastern Europe. It was formerly part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union. Now it is independent. Agriculture is a large part of the economy, particularly grain production, and it was known as the breadbasket of Russia. The soil is very rich and black.

Ukraine was settled by Vikings who had a kingdom centered around Kiev. Later on the Mongols controlled the area until eventually the Russians based in Moscow added it to their empire. Poland and Sweden were also major players in the area for a time.

Ukraine was devastated in the early 20th century with anti-Jewish pogroms, famine, and communist oppression, and another genocide during the Nazi invasion in World War II.
