In the United States the position of United States Attorney General is a United States Cabinet appointment.
The Attorney General is usually a lawyer, and the Department of Justice answers to him. He plays a role in appointing Judges and Prosecutors. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Bureau of Prisons, the United States Marshall Service, and several other government agency report to the Attorney General.
Under US law Cabinet Secretaries, like the Attorney General, have to be confirmed by the United States Senate.
