Varangians

The Varangians were groups of Vikings who travelled into eastern Europe and established trade routes along the Volga, Dnieper, and Dniester river systems. From there they had access to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. They made contact with the Byzantine Empire and with the Muslims to the east. Varangians also served as elite mercenaries for the Byzantines.
