William H. Brownlee

From Encyc

William H. Brownlee (1917-1983) was a leading American Bible scholar.

He was a junior Fellow at the American Schools of Oriental Research in Jerusalem when the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. As the scrolls were brought to the school when its Director was away, it was Brownlee and John Trever, the other junior Fellow, who first realised the scrolls' age and importance.

Brownlee published many works on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He became Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate School and Director of their Dead Sea Scrolls Project, retiring in 1982.
