Painting Of William Tecumseh Sherman by George Peter Alexander Healy

William Tecumseh Sherman was a Civil War general for the North. He operated in the western theater, helping Grant take Vicksburg and then leading a successful campaign to capture Atlanta. Following that, he left his supply lines and marched across Georgia to Savannah, a campaign known as the March to the Sea.

Quoted for saying, "War is Hell," and reviled in the South, his reputation has held up fairly well recently. Some historians argue that his strategy caused property destruction but saved many lives as a result, as it quickly put the South out of the war without further battlefield casualties.
