Woodcuts

From Encyc
this woodcut from De re Metallica shows metal workers, hard at work, in their workshop.

The woodcut was a technique for illustrating books published on early printing presses. A picture or diagram was carved directly into block of wood, which was then filled with ink for printing that page of the book. Some books, like De re Metallica, are known for their widely re-used beautiful woodcuts.
