Amy Gleason is an American civil servant.[1] Her career became the focus of intense interest when the Presidency of Donald Trump publicly named her as, officially, in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).[2][3]
The Department of government Efficiency is a newly repurposed agency of the United States Government, which has been exercising great power since Trump's second administration took over.[1] It has acted like it has the authority to fire any of the over 2 million individuals working for the US Government.
Gleason's role in the United States Digital Service[edit]
The United States Digital Service (USDS) is an agency, set up through an Executive Order, by then President Barack Obama, in 2014.[3] He set it up during the period when he was instituting the USA's version of universal health care -- widely known as Obamacare. He set it up to scrutinize and give advice on duplication of computer services, mainly related to changes in how health care was provided.
Gleason was a manager in USDS, during the Obama Presidency and during Donald Trump's first term.
Gleason spent the years of the Biden Presidency in the private sector.[4] Russell Street Ventures, in Nashville, employed her as their chief product officer. She is reported to have had a working relationship with Jared Kushner, former President Trump's influential son-in-law, during this period.
Gleason returned to working in the USDS, in 2024. Some sources speculate she may have chosen to return after Trump was elected to a second term.
Gleason's role in the USDS during Donald Trump's second term, her role in supervising DOGE[edit]
For its first month of operation it was assumed that Trump donor and close advisor Elon Musk was administering, But, in late February, Trump insiders clarified that Musk was merely advising the President, that he was not, himself, a government employee, and that Amy Gleason, a relatively unknown official, who had, until then been relatively unknown, was officially DOGE's leader.[1]
Challengers said that this arrangement, where Musk was not DOGE's leader, merely an advisor, who was not an official employee, was a ploy that meant communication between Musk and Trump were exempt from subpoenas in a way that would not be true if he were an employee.[1]

Finally, after over a month of stonewalling — including a bizarre interlude at Tuesday’s White House press briefing in which Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt snapped, 'I am not going to reveal the name of that individual from this podium,' as if she’d been asked who buried Jimmy Hoffa — the administration informed the press that the acting leader of DOGE is an obscure official named Amy Gleason.

It was not immediately clear when Gleason was formally named to the position. The White House identified Gleason as the acting DOGE administrator shortly after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt repeatedly declined Tuesday afternoon to reveal who's in charge of DOGE during a briefing with reporters.

But the White House has insisted in court that Mr. Musk is not the administrator of the cost-cutting team, adding to the sense of opacity surrounding it. On Monday, a federal judge pressed the government for clarity about the billionaire’s role, expressing concern that unauthorized individuals were effectively running the office.

FINALLY, AN ANSWER: After weeks of questions about who is formally leading DOGE, a White House official granted anonymity to speak openly confirmed to West Wing Playbook that AMY GLEASON, who served as a digital services expert at U.S. Digital Service during Trump’s first term, will serve as acting administrator. Gleason most recently served as chief product officer at Russell Street Ventures, a health care firm in Nashville.
