Battle of Arracourt
The Battle of Arracourt was a mobile tank battle that took place in Lorraine, in northeastern France, in September 1944. Patton's third army had the Germans on the run and yet faced a counterattack from some of Hitler's new panzer brigades equipped with Panther tanks. The American Shermans armed mostly with the 75mm gun held up very well and destroyed the German formations.
Following the battle the way to Germany laid open, but overextended logistics and Eisenhower's decision to focus on Market Garden gave the Germans a few extra weeks to organize a defense along the Siegried line (Western wall).
