American beaver

A beaver is a large riparian rodent with a broad flattened tail. Beavers build dams in freshwater streams, and are an important part of the local ecology.

Beavers were once very plentiful throughout North America. They are still common, but their numbers have been moderated by hunting and loss of habitat. Beaver pelts are valuable.
