Bettws Clyro

From Encyc

Bettws Clyro is a church in a remote location about 5km north-east of Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales. It dates to at least the 13th century, and was fully rebuilt in 1878.[1]

Earlier than the 20th century it was a chapelry in the parish of Clyro, also known as Capel Bettws. The word "bettws" refers to a prayer house, and "capel" refers to a chapel.[1] In the 1870s this chapelry had a population of 188.[2]

In the 19th century the renowned Victorian diarist Francis Kilvert preached at Bettws Clyro.[3]
