The term canal usually refers to water filled ditch.

Irrigation canals are used to carry water to crops.

Canals are widely used for navigation. The Suez Canal is the largest sea-level canal. Other large canals, like the Panama Canal and the Welland Canal use canal locks to maintain navigable sections at different elevations above sea-level.
