Carpet bombing

From Encyc
In this photo a line of explosions can be seen, in Vietnam, after a B-52 bomber dropped a long sequence of bombs.

The term carpet bombing refers to an air force dropping a closely spaced sequence of aerial bombs designed to indiscriminately level a whole region of enemy territory.

The term is inspired by carpets, the floor covering, as the exploding bombs cover every spot on the target area, just like the floor covering covers every part of a floor.
